“Here is your assignment: go to YouTube.com and find a political speech (or political advertisement that includes a lot of language, rather than just images).
Now, apply what you have learned this semester about how language can influence thought to analyze the speech/ad. In your response, try to address the following questions:

Who is the speaker? What is the context of the speech (e.g., where and when was the speech delivered, what was their goal or purpose in giving the speech, who was the audience, etc.)
How are they trying to use language to achieve their goals (e.g., to persuade people to vote for them or support their cause or feel a certain way about the country or a piece of legislation or their opponent…)?
In particular, you should thoroughly discuss the subtle uses of language and rhetoric in the video; for example, you could assess what metaphors are they using, or what grammatical constructions they are using, what labels or key words they use, and any other aspect of the language you think matters. In the end, you can evaluate whether you think the speech is effective or not (and why), or effective for certain audiences and not others (and why).”
