For each of our discussions, please choose either Topic #1 or Topic #2 for your response.
Topic Choice #1: Applying A Person-Centered Approach
Having a positive, empathetic, and trusting relationship is essential to person-centered approaches to the counseling profession. Without this type of relationship, counseling efforts will prove ineffective at best. Our first discussion for the module asks you to expand upon your knowledge of the person-centered approaches to therapy, giving special attention to our reading and video content.
After completing the reading and video content for this module, please respond to the following:
Referring directly to the video content and our reading material, explain how Transactional Analysis, Gestalt, or Existential Therapy may be regarded as a person-centered approach to counseling. Please use specific concepts to support your response.
Drawing upon your own independent research, describe a case of an individual whose problems would necessitate a person-centered approach to therapy. Next, using one therapeutic approach not mentioned in your previous response, explain why that approach would be the most useful and why.
Topic Choice #2: Comparing Therapeutic Perspectives
Although covering a lot of different ground, the reading content for the week provides some important opportunities for you to link together compassionate approaches to therapy. Your job in the below conversation is to first explain how these different therapeutic approaches are influenced by the notion of “self-compassion,” and second, how a case study of your choosing shows the differences between these perspectives and the psychodynamic perspective.
Before participating in the below activity, please be sure to read the following journal articles in this module:
Crozier, D. (2014). Self-compassion. An introduction to self-compassion and its relevance in gestalt therapy. Links to an external site. [PDF, File Size 339 KB]. Gestalt Journal of Australia & New Zealand, 10(2), 85-108.
Edwards, W., & Milton, M. (2014). Retirement therapy? Older people’s experiences of existential therapy relating to their transition to retirement. Links to an external site. [PDF, File Size 161 KB]. Counselling Psychology Review, 29(2), 43-53.
Then respond to the following:
Giving reference to the Crozier et al. and Edwards et al. readings, explain how the concept of self-compassion could be used effectively in gestalt and existential therapeutic approaches. (Please be sure to specifically discuss the transition into retirement addressed by Edwards et al.)
Explain the ways in which person-centered and existential approaches to therapy differ from the classic psychodynamic perspective. Provide one important example of a case study (you choose the case), in which the classic psychodynamic approach would prove less effective than a person-centered or existential approach.
Your initial post should be at least 250 words and must substantively integrate the assigned readings with proper APA Links to an external site.style formatting.
