What were your initial thoughts on this week’s topic of Power and Oppression and the readings that you read. Agree or Disagree
In Minkler and Wakimoto, the use of power maps is discussed, and in particular, how they are helpful in finding “strange bedfellows” or those who you may not see as allies or opponents. Think about the health issue that you might choose for projects (or one that you have worked in previously). What might be some “strange bedfellows” in that health issue?
In appendix 1, Hyde brings up “the many ways that White individuals benefit from unrecognized or unacknowledged everyday expectations, rituals, and processes,” that connect “the personal with broader structures and promote or protect racism” (pg 431) as part of the learning in anti-oppression work. The author connects this specifically in engaging with the work of Peggy McIntosh (The Invisible Knapsack).
