Assessment Guidelines
Clinical Governance (CG) is a core element of Health care provision. Choosing one of the provided
scenarios OR a current quality issue from your practice area, analyse the identified health care
problem in relation to quality care provision.
Within your analysis, apply relevant models or frameworks to assess the issue and potential for
change. Critically discuss how using one chosen clinical governance strategy and the Audit cycle can
improve the quality of practice in the given health care area.
Points to consider
-It is important to remember that your essay needs to demonstrate the learning outcomes for the
module to be assessed (see page 8).
– You are advised to read more widely around Quality improvement in care and the value and
application of Clinical Governance strategy.
– Use reference lists, relevant policy from Health care providers, core texts and Journals available
from the University library to support your work throughout.
In the assignment you need to;
 Demonstrate a clear understanding of what Clinical Governance is; the context for this within health
and social care Organisations and the impact for your role as a clinician.
 Think about what the drivers might be that influence this process, eg. political, social and financial
influences on Health Authority (HA) and those also from Health Authority to individual organisations
(eg; consider HA Strategic plans related to Quality improvement).
 Briefly demonstrate your understanding of how quality is assessed and monitored within care
organisations. Consider what structures are in place to ensure Total Quality Management and the
extent to what they support provision of quality care for both staff and the patient experience.
Ensure you identify your chosen scenario or aspect from practice that you want to consider in
order to improve the quality of care provision.
 Provide insight into your analysis of the situational factors for your chosen scenario / topic. You can
choose and apply a relevant tool / model / framework to help you with this. Eg; SWOT analysis, cause
& effect analysis
 Briefly summarise key causes of issue from the evidence base about your chosen topic.
 Consider the process for changing practice to improve quality of care related to your findings. You
can use relevant tools or frameworks to analyse this.
Choose one appropriate CG strategy and Audit for application to improve the aspect of care
for the chosen scenario.
 Make specific recommendations that ensure safe practice, shape, and inspire the quality of care for
patients, staff and the organisation as appropriate. This should be justified and related to relevant
theory.
 Within your discussion, clearly identify the relationship between the chosen strategy and process
of Audit.
 Identify the value of using standards and propose standards to measure effectiveness of the
recommendations for change you make.
Relate, and where appropriate justify, both your situational analysis and recommendations to
current theory and policy on quality and clinical governance.

The essay should be richly referenced. It is important to read widely, critically
appraise the literature and apply to your discussion.
Your assignment must be presented in the following format:
 It must be word-processed in 11 point Arial font and 1.5 line spacing
 All pages must be numbered
 Margins must be as follows: Top: 2.5 cm, Bottom: 2.5 cm, Left: 3 cm, Right: 2 cm
 It should not contain your name(s) but do submit work using your AIE Number.
Assignment length
The length of an assignment is limited by a set number of 3,000 words to contribute towards
the development of writing skills and to ensure all work is assessed equitably. We therefore
require you to complete your assignments within the number of words specified in the
assignment brief.
You will need to think carefully about how best to explain your case within the permitted
number of words, using, for example, an appropriate mix of text, drawings, diagrams and
tables, supplemented by the information contained in appendices.
Please also remember that an essay can be enhanced or damaged through layout, for
example, placing all tables and drawings in appendices can hamper the flow of discussion.
Decisions therefore need to be made about the most appropriate place to use tables etc, to
support your case.
The specified word count refers to the main body of the essay and does not include, a title
page, reference list or appendices. The word count does include headings and in-text citations,
but not equations, tables or diagrams.
Appendices themselves will not be marked. However, inappropriate use of appendices will be
taken into consideration when awarding the final mark.
Words that exceed the maximum allowed will not be marked. If in doubt, you should discuss
this with the Module Leader before submission.

module, and different feedback will serve slightly different purposes. Feedback is designed to
support your learning and help you to improve subsequent work, so you need to get the most

This should be no more than one side of A4.
We will also be pleased to provide feedback on one FULL publish… of your assignment.
Once you have received our feedback, it is important that you update your work in order to
address the feedback provided. If any of the feedback is not clear then please email your
