his week you will begin your presentations on a nursing theorist.
A theory is a group of concepts that are based on previously gained knowledge and organized in such a way that it defines the scope of nursing practice. The scope can include things that involve the daily tasks of nursing, they can be tangible physical objects and tasks or they can be emotional, mental, or spiritual in nature. Theories help us understand why these tasks or processes are in place and they help us understand why they are important.
Theories can provide foundational care concepts in nursing to answer the age-old question…..” what do nurses do?”
Nursing theory began in the late 19th century when it played a key role in advancing nursing education.
There are three different levels of nursing theory each level becoming more focused:
● Grand Nursing Theories — These theories are broad, abstract, and involve complex concepts. They can provide a general framework for nursing concepts regarding people and health. Theories of this nature are usually derived from a theorist’s personal experience and practice.
● Middle-Range Nursing Theories — These types of theories are more specific and focus on specific areas of nursing versus broad concepts. They often are based again on a theorist’s own personal practice or research and those from a similar practice.
● Practice-Level Nursing Theories — These theories are the most focused, dealing with a specific patient population. The concepts of these theories tend to deal with issues that directly affect patients more so than the above-mentioned theories.
You will need to select a nursing theorist, follow the provided rubric, and create a presentation for your classmates through a PowerPoint with a voice-over that will be due on week 13.
