Discuss how the following situation does or does not exemplify an appropriate peer evaluation process. How would you address this nursing situation?
You have newly joined a three-member committee on your unit responsible for completing the peer evaluations of your colleagues. The first two evaluations went smoothly. The committee followed the approved evaluation criteria and successfully reached agreements on the initial evaluations. Today, the committee is meeting to work on the yearly peer evaluation of Jacob, one of your coworkers. Jacob has been employed in your hospital for five years as an RN and has worked on your unit for the past year. When you bring out the evaluation form, Lisa, another committee member, slams down her fist on the conference table.
“What’s wrong?” you ask.
Lisa says, “We really don’t need to go through this form item-by-item. Everyone knows Jacob is a jerk. I worked with him four years ago over in Med-Surg and he was a nightmare. We just need to cut to the chase and give him the lowest score”.
Despite your attempt to focus the discussion on the criteria set forth in the unit’s peer evaluation process, Lisa is adamant in her insistence that Jacob receive a poor evaluation. Pat, the other member of the committee, has sat ashen faced and silent since Lisa made her initial outburst. Finally, Lisa says she will refuse to sign the form unless the committee complies with her demands.
