PYCL 585 Assignment #2 – Knowledge of Instructional Practices in Exceptional Student Education (FL DOE ESE 3.1 thru 3.11) (20 points) The purpose of this assignment is to learn about a variety of instructional practices that benefit all students, as well as students with disabilities. Please complete the following steps:

2. Most school districts will provide a resource that recommends instructional strategies for students with disabilities. To locate your specific district’s materials, search Students with disabilities at your school district’s Web site; describe your findings and how this can assist you as a school counselor, collaboration with teachers and other educational stakeholders, and with students.
3. Next, review the following two resources for Teaching Strategies for Students with Disabilities. Take notes on which practices are the most useful in your current teaching setting by answering the following questions:

How can you apply the I.N.C.L.U.D.E. model in your classroom? How does it meet the needs of the age group or grade level that you teach? Provide a specific example that incorporates each of the elements in the I.N.C.L.U.D.E. model (e.g., how do you identify classroom environmental, curricular, and instructional demands).

The Essential Nine. Select an activity that you have used in your classroom recently and consider how you could have applied each of The Essential Nine strategies to improve instruction in that activity.
4. Visit the IRIS Learning Strategies Modules SRSD: Using Learning Strategies to Enhance Student Learning
(http://iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu/module/srs/). This module will help you to follow the SRSD Model (Self-RegulatedStrategyDevelopment) that
presents the six steps required to implement an instructional strategy.
5. Click Challenge and view the video to develop an understanding of the need to implement instructional strategies. Be sure to consider the challenge from the perspective of the age level or grade level that best describe the children with whom you work. (Note that a transcriipt is also available for your review.) Answer questions provided:
Why do you think Mr. Carter’s students are having difficulty in remembering what he has taught them?
What advice would you give Mr. Carter?What procedures might Ms. Lin suggest?
6. Click Next to review Perspectives & Resources for ideas on how to address these problems. Compare these suggestions to your ideas.
7. Scroll to the bottom of Perspectives & Resources and review and compare the characteristics of strategic learners and non-strategic learners. Continue click Next and note the steps for Self-Regulated Strategy Development.
8. Using this module and other sources from the Internet, analyze the instructional needs of a student in your classroom (FCAS ESE3.1,3.4), identify instructional strategies that could be applied (FCAS ESE 3.3) and the process of differentiating and accommodating the student (FCAS ESE 3.5), and apply the steps of the Self-Regulated Strategy Development to this need. Use information gained from the IRIS module, Teaching Strategies for Students with Disabilities, and other resources (FCAS ESE 3.2) to describe how they meet the needs of the children in your classroom.
Carefully review the rubric for Assignment #2 at the end of the syllabus. To earn a high grade on the assignment, aim to meet the requirements in the “exceeded” column.
