Assignment Description

Learning Goal: I’m working on a psychology question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.
Task:
Identify something specific in your own life, academic or social, where you would like to improve your working memory. Consider how you rely on working memory in this area of your life.
Come up with one strategy that would improve your working memory as it relates to the situation that you want to improve in your own life. For example, you might struggle to keep certain information in mind during everyday tasks. Make sure you can explain how your plan specifically relates to the situation you want to improve.
Apply this strategy in your own life over at least 2-3 days. Spend 20 minutes each day to reflect on your experience in a journal (you might consider writing about it in your Writing Journals for Expressive Clarity!). Be sure to also reflect on the experience once you are done applying the new strategy over 2-3 days. Use these reflections to help you write up your final assessment of your strategy. (See Submission Requirements below.)
It is important to measure your efforts to change. So be sure to do the following:
Before implementing your strategy, take a working memory test (for instance, the OCL, or N-Back test – or another test as appropriate to your strategy) to obtain a baseline score.
Implement your strategy for 2-3 days. Take notes about it.
Take the same working memory test on the 4th day to see if there is any difference in your overall working memory.
Your Submission:
Write a summary of the experience which includes discussion and assessment of your strategy in no more than 500 words. Make sure you include all the following in your summary:
A clear definition of working memory
An explanation of the situation that relies on working memory
A full description of the intervention with justification and analysis of how it is related to working memory
An explanation of the benefits from improving your working memory in this area of your life.
An explanation of how you measured your success using a valid measure explaining why this reflects working memory and why it is an appropriate measure in this case.
A reflection on how successful your strategy was based on your measurement and experience.
Be sure to link your measures and outcomes to your initial description of working memory
Evidence based arguments.
Purpose:
The primary aim of Assignments 1-3 is to introduce students to the concept of designing and executing an experiment, justifying their choices with evidence or logic, analyzing and using valid metrics of a psychological construct, and effectively communicating ideas. The secondary aim is to illustrate ways of implementing strategies that may improve their own practices in their academic or personal lives.
Learning Outcomes:
One score per LO (i.e., the student will receive three numeric scores, each with one of the following LOs selected).
#DescribeCogCapacities: Clearly describe cognitive capacities, such as executive functions, and their importance in real world situations.
A score of 4 will be assigned when the student accurately describes the executive function, elaborates on the definition throughout their assignment by linking the description of that executive function with measures and outcomes of that executive function in a thoughtful and evidence-based manner.

#MeasureCogCapacities: Use contextually appropriate, valid, and reliable tools to measure cognitive capacities.
