Good Afternoon Class,
Research Question: Why do humans continue to date after they have been disappointed or experienced a failed relationship?
Research Method: Longitudinal.
Hypothesis: Humans are meant to always seek a partner. There are different motives, however, they are driven to find comfort in another human.
I chose Longitudinal Method because humans are continuously adapting. This method allows us to research over time and see the changes in mindset and behavior. A negative of this method could be that it does take time, it is not an immediate answer. It can also require more resources and money over an extended time. It does require patience and dedication. I do believe that for this, and many other, scenarios, it is the perfect method to acquire accurate data. Ideally, it would involve multiple people of different demographics over a period of time. Biographies would be required since the way a person grows up influences their behaviors and decisions.
There are situations that arise that cause a human to change their motivations and behaviors. A human may start out dating because they are searching for the fairy tale love that they have seen in Disney movies or Nicolas Sparks movies or novels. As time goes on they may experience family pressure, whether it be from religious standpoint or parents demanding grandchildren. There is also finances that may cause someone to continue trying. Society has become more difficult to live a comfortable life as a single person. Especially in areas where the cost of living is high. Military personnel often rush into marriages so that they may earn more income to support their dependents and to gain Basic Housing Allowance, which allows them to move out of the barracks and into a home. There are civilians that will marry a service member, simply so they can gain free healthcare. Social media also plays a part in humans need for companionship. There is plenty “happy couple” content circulating the internet. People are influenced by this content and feel like they are missing out. A relationship starts to resemble a product that people are lead to believe they need.
The difficulties that humans attempt to overcome to reach their happy ending are:
Trust Issues: There may be trauma from their past, insecurities, or witnessing others be dishonest.
Children: Single parents experience a smaller dating pool because some people are not ready, they do not like children, or they want their own and are not willing to be a part of a child’s life that does not belong to them. Some people that do want children meet people that enjoy their life without and have no interest in becoming a parent. Which brings us to the ones that do not, they are a smaller population, however they are searching for someone to live life without children happily.
Career Paths: Some people are in temporary positions and will be moving away from that location. Knowing that time is limited makes it difficult to make connections. If connections are made, then decisions have to made to either change careers, look into staying in the same location, or attempt long distance. With so many career paths there are different schedules for everyone. A person may have a tight schedule with very little free time or a job that calls on them during their off time, this makes it difficult to meet someone that can fit into the free time or is understanding. Plenty careers also cause people to travel a lot. They may be located in one place, however, are rarely ever home. There is also the understanding of individual’s careers. Not everyone will be able to understand what a person’s career is or what they do. This could cause miscommunication, or it can feel like they have nothing in common if they cannot talk about work.
This topic has many variants to it; however, I believe it is something to research. If we continue to educate and understand it as individuals, there may be less unhappy people.
