In Illinois, an APRN must meet the following requirements to obtain a controlled substance certificate:

Hold an active APRN license with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).
Complete a minimum of 45 graduate hours in pharmacology.
Pass a jurisprudence examination.
Submit an application to the IDFPR, along with the required fees.
Scope of Practice for APRN’s in Illinois When Prescribing Controlled Substances

APRNs in Illinois have prescriptive authority for Schedule II, III, IV, and V controlled substances. This means that they can prescribe these substances for any medically appropriate use. However, there are some limitations to APRN prescribing. For example, APRNs cannot prescribe Schedule II substances for maintenance therapy or to treat chronic pain.

Process of How to Obtain a DEA Number

To obtain a DEA number, an APRN must submit an application to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
