Core Competencies
The Nursing Practitioner role is in demand and needs from 2020 to 2030
is for more than 114,000 (University of North Dakota, 2022). With this fast-growing career, NP students must be aware of the requirements and competencies for their track. The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties has developed a list of seven core competencies to evolve the Registered Nurse to APN role. The seven competencies —Direct Clinical Practice, Guidance and Coaching, Consultation, Evidence-Based Practice, Leadership, Collaboration, and Ethical Decision Making (Hamric et al., 2019).
Directly Clinical Practice
As an ANP, providing quality care in a complex health system and a diverse world is essential. Recognizing and respecting patients’ cultural identification is vital to building meaningful partnerships; mastery of direct clinical practice results from successfully acquiring the other six competencies (Hamric et al., 2019). Advanced level of Care provides refined assessment skills, execution, and evaluation of practice interventions based on integrated comprehension from several sciences, such as biophysical, psychosocial, behavioral, cultural, economic, and nursing science (Hamric et al., 2019). Additionally, they know the scope and boundaries of their practice state.
Guidance and Coaching
Guidance and coaching are a skill that is mastered with experience to get patients to take accountability for their health. Mentoring and mentoring the patient needs to be activated and empowered by placing responsibility for pursuing health where it belongs to the patient (Hamric et al., 2019). Determining the patient’s readiness to learn and take accountability, NPs maximized their participation and control in their health/illness care. In addition to the extended competencies, NPs employed elementary skills such as health promotion and illness prevention education and displayed advanced communication skills. Especially in the United States, severe illness and severe illness account for a disproportionate share of national healthcare spending. Consultation and Collaboration

Characterized by patient care consultation with nursing staff, interpreting the role of nursing to other professional staff, and providing patient advocacy by consulting to staff treating complex patients and families, advising, and collaborating with other professionals, providing constructive feedback, and improving the knowledge of the staff. Being aware of their limits, ANPs also consult other health professionals and make recommendations for referrals when they need to (Hamric et al., 2019)
Evidence-Based Practice and Leadership
EBP decides the Care of individual patients (Hamric et al., 2019, p.225). ANPs are leading in improving care planning and providing disease management with attention to cost, invasiveness, simplicity, acceptability, and efficiency.
The best leadership is leading by example; transformational leadership occurs when people interact in ways that inspire higher levels of motivation and morality among participants (Hamric et al., 2019).
Ethical Decision Making
The moral standard of the ANP is both complex and not a learned skill. Advocating and providing a service standard under Medicare and Medicaid guidelines can be challenging. Other Ethical decisions confront nurse practitioners (NPs) such as abortion, patient nonadherence to treatment, childhood immunizations, regulations and laws, financial constraints, and insurance reimbursement (Hamric et al., 2019). Another Ethical trend is polypharmacy with patients with many chronic diseases, which increases the risk of adverse drug reactions.
Leadership, Healthcare Systems, and Independent Practice
As an ANP student, the first step is to work hard in the graduate program and learn and obtain the knowledge to pass the FNP exam. To succeed, the student must learn study techniques and time management skills.
Organizations such as the AANP and participating in volunteer activities. Unlike internship programs, there is little competition for volunteer programs. Even more than this additionally, many employers love to see volunteer work on resumes (Nursing Journal, 2022). Volunteering is rewarding and offers additional networking. Being an active member can also encourage leadership skills and opportunities to learn new skills. Many organizations host annual seminars that offer hands-out training, certificates, and CEUs.
Mentorship and shadowing are other avenues to obtain hands-on training and knowledge of the healthcare system. Many large hospitals offer these programs. Contact human resources or the physician’s office for opportunities. (Nurse Journal, 2022).
Shadowing helps the student step beyond the classroom or computer where they have read about a nurse’s duties and onto a hospital floor where they can see firsthand how nurses handle difficult situations. (Nurse Journal, 2022).
