SAMPLE ANSWER
The therapist, let’s call her Dr. Smith, was seeing a client, let’s call her Ms. Jones, for depression. Ms. Jones was a young woman who had recently lost her job and was struggling to cope with the financial and emotional stress.
During one session, Ms. Jones mentioned that she was thinking about going back to school to get a new degree. Dr. Smith encouraged her to do so, and even offered to help her with the application process.
Ms. Jones was grateful for Dr. Smith’s help, and she was accepted to the school of her choice. However, she soon realized that she could not afford to pay for tuition and living expenses. She went back to Dr. Smith for help, and Dr. Smith offered to pay for her tuition.
Dr. Smith’s offer of financial assistance created an ethical dilemma. On the one hand, Dr. Smith wanted to help Ms. Jones achieve her educational goals. On the other hand, Dr. Smith knew that it was unethical for her to provide financial assistance to a client.
Dr. Smith decided to consult with her supervisor about the ethical dilemma. Her supervisor advised her that it was not appropriate for her to provide financial assistance to Ms. Jones. Dr. Smith agreed with her supervisor’s advice, and she told Ms. Jones that she could not help her with the tuition.
Ms. Jones was disappointed, but she understood Dr. Smith’s position. She decided to take out a loan to pay for tuition.
The ethical violations in this vignette are:
Dr. Smith gave Ms. Jones professional advice outside of the therapy session.
Dr. Smith offered to pay for Ms. Jones’s tuition.
Dr. Smith did not consult with her supervisor before offering to pay for Ms. Jones’s tuition.
These ethical violations could have serious consequences for both Dr. Smith and Ms. Jones. Dr. Smith could be accused of unethical conduct by her licensing board, and she could lose her license to practice therapy. Ms. Jones could feel like she was being taken advantage of, and she could lose trust in Dr. Smith.
It is important for therapists to be aware of the ethical guidelines that govern their profession. They should always consult with their supervisor if they are faced with an ethical dilemma.
