MY BRIEF IS ATTACHED TO ORDER: RACISM IN HEALTHCARE
Elevator speeches are “short speeches that can be completed in the time it takes to ride an elevator” (Yonkaitis, 2021, p. 54). These short speeches can be used for advocating for causes or ideas. There are 4 parts to an elevator speech: introduction, problem, solution, and ask. As a part of these quick speeches, an idea or issue can be supported or opposed.
Assignment Instructions
Students will create a 3-minute elevator speech using Zoom or present the speech.
Students will present the speech in 4 parts: introduction, problem, solution, and ask.
Introduction: Briefly identify yourself (who you are, your role, not identifying school or employer). Tell the person something that differentiates you and/or establishes a relationship (same hometown, interests, etc.). Discuss why the topic is important. Give a background of your interest and experience with this issue. Share your qualifications to address this issue.
Problem: Briefly describe the problem the target audience can help solve. Include key data or a compelling story to support why the problem should be addressed. Include 3 main points: the problem, who the problem impacts, and how it impacts them. Your specific goal/ interest in a health policy problem or population. Describe why this issue is important.
Solution: Most of the time will be spent on the solution. Share your proposed solution. Tell the policymaker how you believe it will solve the problem. Focus on the problem you have identified, and avoid including other problems that could make the discussion harder to follow.
Ask: Ask for the person’s support. Tell them how they can make a difference. Ask for what you need to move toward the solution.
