Members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community, including members under its umbrella, have been more widely accepted in mainstream Western society, and as such, there has been an increase in the studies between the relationship of religion and sexual orientation, and in turn, prejudice relating to sexual orientation. In “Homosexuality as Haram: Relations among Gender, Contact, Religiosity, and Sexual Prejudice in Muslim Individuals,” by Yeck and Anderson, the relation between attitudes towards homosexuality and Muslim-identifying individuals is explored. The purpose of the work is to explore attitudes towards homosexuality from individuals usually marginalized from the statistical data pool, for instance, Eastern religions and Judeo-Christian religions from an Eastern perspective. The article overall covers the standings that Muslims tend to support the LGBTQ community, with women predominantly being more supportive, and with a skew towards Muslims originating or living in the United States or Western Europe tending to be more supportive of LGBTQ members than the those hailing or originating from the Middle East. The study capitalizes the use of a survey in Arabic to record its studies, while excluding members that either identify as LGBTQ or did not specify as such; the article finds that while there is a restriction of homosexuality in law in most Muslim majority countries, many religious leaders and high-standing Muslim officials have begun to work towards the incorporation of LGBTQ community into Muslim public standing.
In a personal study, I would likely allow the inclusion of LGBTQ+ identifying individuals, and likely expand the survey to be open to formerly Muslim individuals as well as concurrently Muslim or Islam-Practicing individuals.
