Complementary and alternative medicine encompasses a wide range of therapeutic perspectives, which is used alongside conventional treatments in diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and hypertension. Safety and effectiveness depend on the specific therapy being used and vary depending on these conditions. (Johnson et al., 2021).
Alternative and Complementary medicine therapies have shown promise in cancer care for reducing cancer-related symptoms and enhancing patients’ quality of life (Johnson et al., 2021). However, there are dangers associated with using untested dietary supplements or herbal medicines, such as combinations with standard cancer treatments or unwanted effects. To guarantee the best possible results for cancer patients, healthcare practitioners must thoroughly assess the safety and efficacy of alternative treatments.
Better glycemic control and the consequent improvement in health are secondary to the use of complementary and alternative medicine techniques in the case of diabetic patients and their control, such is the case of the use of nutritional supplements, herbal medicines, and mental therapies. with relaxation techniques (Smith & Brown, 2021). Although, their effectiveness and safety are somewhat limited by the lack of studies related to them.Nurses need to use caution when offering complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments for diabetes and should instead focus on evidence-based procedures.
Nutritional supplements, herbal medications, and mind-body treatments are all examples of CAM that can be used to manage diabetes, with the potential to improve glucose control and overall health (Smith & Brown, 2021). However, evidence for these medicines is inconsistent, therefore further research is required to guarantee their safety and efficacy. When caring for diabetic patients, nurses should exercise caution when recommending CAM therapies and instead focus on proven methods.
