This week’s discussion activity involves thinking about demographic characteristics of families and how they may affect caregiving needs. The goal is to share information with your group members and discuss the implications and applications of this information.
The first thing you need to do is go to one of the databases in the Searching for information section of the course content (e.g., PubMedCentral, Google Scholar, one of the databases in GALILEO) and find a journal article that deals with demographic issues and caregiving for older adults. It can be specific, dealing with a particular group of caregivers (e.g., male, African American, grandchildren), or general, addressing a larger group (e.g., the U.S. population as a whole). This article should be dated within the past 5 years. Potentially useful terms to search are combinations of “caregiving”, “eldercare”, “demographic”, “family”, “population”, and anything related to a specific group (e.g., “Korean”). If you have trouble finding an article, feel free to ask your friendly campus librarians or me for help.
