Prompt One:
1. What sorts of cultural conditions would have prevented Shakespeare’s sister from achieving literary success, according to Woolf?
2. Much has changed since Woolf wrote “Shakespeare’s Sister,” and yet much remains the same. What sorts of cultural conditions (think about intersectionality) might prevent today’s women from achieving literary (or other cultural forms) of success, and why?
3. What new or challenging info did you get from the videos this week, and what did you like most?

1. What sorts of cultural conditions would have prevented Shakespeare’s sister from achieving literary success, according to Woolf?
2. “Beauty and the Beast of Advertising” describes effects of mass media/advertising that have become, if anything, more pervasive now than when the piece was written, and the more recent Kilbourne video elaborates on these effects somewhat. Pick one of the sub-sections of the reading: “Housewives or Sex Objects,” “Creating Artificiality,” or “Influencing Sexual Attitudes,” and provide an example from your own experience of today’s forms of mass media/advertising that fits, and explain why it fits.
