The Secretary of Health and Human Services has approved the number of interoperability standards. These standards are published for the certification commission for the healthcare information technology certification process and for state level HIE programs. Since the process of adding recognized interoperability standards is ongoing there is a need for Communication plans to guide implementation over a variety of healthcare entities.

Contact the state representative for HIE (from the above list), what can you do as a MSN to be part of improving the HIE and look for successful examples of HIE in your state. If you cannot find anything in your state look to another state for examples. Compare and contrast your findings and post a summary of your experience.
