Read an academic journal article covering a specific topic related to interpersonal communication;
Write a 1,200-1,500 word response that both summarizes and responds to the article using the questions assigned;
Effectively organize and develop ideas following proper essay format; and,
Cite sources both in-text and on a Works Cited page using current edition MLA formatting.
PART 1 – SUMMARY
Locate and print the article you were assigned using the instructions listed on Canvas.
Watch the How to Read Through a Research Article video (listed at the bottom of the page) and take notes.
Watch the How to Build In-Text Citations video (listed at the bottom of the page) and take notes.
Use the notes you took over the video to carefully read through your article.
Note the following key areas in the article and paraphrase this information to build a summary of the article that includes:
Background – Use the Introduction section of the article to understand what the author(s) learned from previous studies done on the topic as well as what the author(s) hoped to learn in the current study (including any hypotheses made. Put this information in your own words but still cite your article for those ideas.*
Outcomes – Use the Results & Discussions sections of the article to understand what the author(s) learned from the study/experiments done. Specifically, was the hypothesis/hypotheses supported and how/how not? Again, paraphrase this information but still cite your article.*
Conclusion – Use the Discussion & Conclusion sections of the article to understand the limitations of the study, what the author(s) concluded based on this and previous studies, and how further research could be done in the future. Paraphrase this information but still cite your article.*
PART 2 – ANALYSIS
Watch the How to Build an Analysis video (listed at the bottom of the page) and take notes.
Construct an analysis that addresses both of the following areas:
How did the article relate to your life, experiences, and ideas?
How does the information in this article relate to particular concepts we’ve discussed in this course?
Be sure to pull in specific terms from your textbook and notes to support your analysis, paraphrasing information.
Provide an in-text citation for your textbook each time you use textbook information.*
PART 3 – ESSAY
Organize your information into proper essay form:
Create an introduction paragraph that gains attention, works the reader into your topic, communicates a thesis, and previews the areas you are covering (summary and analysis).
Include the body paragraphs– areas from the summary and the analysis that you built. Each body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence, go into details about the areas covered, and include a transition into the next area/paragraph.
Create a conclusion paragraph that restates the thesis, summarizes the main areas covered, and ends vividly/with an impact.
Watch the How to Build a Works Cited Page video and take notes.
Create a Works Cited page that communicates sources used (article, textbook, and any other sources) using proper MLA (current edition) formatting (if you are more comfortable with APA formatting, ask the instructor for permission to use that format instead).*
Proofread and edit your paper – check for proper essay organization, paragraph development, transitions, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Upload your essay by the due date.
Use the links on Canvas to help you with building MLA citations. If you do not provide proper in-text citations and/or a Works Cited page as directed above, you will receive a zero and will be subject to plagiarism penalties.
