Nursing is a learning profession, so advanced practice nurses must always be on the lookout for new information. This promotes the development of health-care abilities and competencies as well as a better understanding of the patient’s needs. Advanced practice nurses should take note of their patients’ psychological, behavioral, and emotional patterns. In order to meet healthcare demands, APNs need to be familiar with pertinent learning theories (Bastable, 2017). Having a thorough understanding of learning theories is essential for influencing patient behavior and establishing an emotional connection (Bastable, 2017).
There are three major psychological and motor learning theories that APNs can use for patient care: cognitive, behaviorist, and social learning theories. According to McSparron et al. (2019), cognitive theory examines a learner’s mental processes while also taking into account the environment in which the learner exists. In utilizing this concept, APNs are able to better understand their mental processes. For instance, cognitive theory can help APNs identify the best methods for patient teaching based on a patient’s individual level of understanding and background knowledge. Both internal mental processes and external influences play a role in intellectual ability, according to the theory (McSparron et al., 2019). Consequently, this learning theory can be applied in a bidirectional manner by enhancing the skills of patients and their own views. Rebuilding learning paradigms requires understanding one’s own thought processes. There are several sub-theories within the theory that discuss specific aspects of understanding and learning. Using this idea, APN develops appropriate care procedures that correspond to providing high-quality care to patients.
Transcultural nursing theory is one of the most current nursing theories. According to Madeleine Leininger, the creator of transcultural nursing theory, nursing practice should be governed by empathy (Larsen et al., 2021). She emphasizes the importance of nurses providing quality care according to patient values and beliefs. The theory helps nurses establish relationships with their patients as nurses in advanced practice. When a patient feels that their values and beliefs are valued, they are more likely to establish confidence and trust in the nursing professional. Providing culturally appropriate care is made easier by it. By cooperating in the care system, the level of care is raised, benefiting society as a whole.
Self-care deficit theory was developed by Dorothea Orem. According to Orem, patients should be in charge of their own health care (Khademian et al., 2020). In addition, she advises patients to learn how to prevent health risks through self-care (Khademian et al., 2020). Advanced practice nurses would be able to provide their patients with better care if they were able to educate their patients about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In turn, patients will receive better quality care since they will be more knowledgeable about how to look after themselves both inside and outside of the hospital.
In relation to cognitive theories, behaviorist theories are based on observable occurrences. Behaviorists believe learning is influenced by the environment and stimulus circumstances. Consequently, the perspective is based on the stimulus-response paradigm. It distinguishes internal variables that encourage learning from environmental influences. The APN may be able to provide better care if they understand how to alter their attitudes and reactions to different patient circumstances. Behaviorist learning theory is used by APN to assess patients’ responses to their environment. In order to achieve the intended patient outcomes, external stimuli are manipulated to produce the desired learning outcomes.
The theory of social learning states that people learn through the imitation of other people’s observable behaviors (Akers & Jennings, 2016). An external influence on cognition, behavior, and the environment is used as a paradigm for continuous learning. A reinforcement analysis is conducted before duplicating observed actions to determine whether they work (Akers & Jennings, 2016). Positive reinforcement encourages people to emulate the learning process and learn from others’ accomplishments (Akers & Jennings, 2016). APNs are taught by seasoned professionals how to enhance patient care. In instances where a particular treatment method produces the best results, APN incorporates the process into patient care.
In summary, obtaining knowledge is a crucial component of patient care, and advanced practice nurses (APNs) should be prepared to use it in effective patient care. There are a variety of learning theories that APNs use to enhance quality, and each plays a key role in developing learning habits. Based on the information I have collected, I believe APNs can provide high quality patient care by using cognitive, behaviorist, and social learning theories because these theories place the patient’s needs in the center.
