There is a growing movement to treat substance use disorders (SUDs) as a public health concern as opposed to a criminal concern, largely due to the recent increases in overdose deaths in suburban communities. Based on the readings and course materials, what do you think would be the best approach to addressing substance use disorders across the country? What are your thoughts about the criminalization of substance use?
Substance use disorders, like many health conditions, impact an individual’s thoughts about themselves, others, and their future, and are often comorbid with other psychological disorders (e.g., it is not uncommon for someone with an SUD to also be diagnosed with depression or an anxiety disorder). This is Beck’s cognitive triad, from Chapter 6. Try to put yourself in someone else’s shoes: What are some automatic thoughts that someone with an SUD and comorbid anxiety/depression might have? How might that make them feel? How might that impact their behavior, in general and with respect to their SUD?
Substance use disorders are a class of psychological disorder that is highly stigmatized. After completing the readings and viewing the course materials on this topic, what are your thoughts on why that is? Does the stigma interfere with treatment of these disorders? Why are individuals blamed for this disorder, and is that blame warranted? This should be a discussion of the actual evidence, not your own beliefs on the topic. What does the research say?
