Module 3 Discussion
by Odline Raphael – Tuesday, May 23, 2023, 8:59 PMNumber of replies: 1Patient’s rights
For healthcare professionals to build trust between the patients, it’s paramount to ensure that they respect patients’ rights. In addition, this will help them achieve a positive health outcome as patients will give a positive review of the services offered. Patients have to be treated with dignity, be allowed to make medical decisions where possible, and also get required medical care for any preexisting health conditions. We have various medical sources and associations that have bet set forth such as the American Medical Association, HIPAA, and The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act among others (AHA, 2023). Some of the advocacy priorities that the American Association of Patients’ Bill of Rights focuses on include, guaranteeing access to healthcare and provision of financial assistance, reinforcement the healthcare personnel, advancing quality, equity, and transformations, and ratifying supervisory and managerial relief.
Healthcare professionals must ensure that patient’s rights are upheld at all costs and to ensure this is achieved, they can employ the following strategies. For nurses, they can ensure that they provide nursing ethics education and training. By so doing this will help everyone to understand the rights of the patients and the best practices to apply when dealing with patients with various health conditions. On some occasions, some healthcare professionals may not have the required information to handle some patients and therefore, there is a need for ethics education and training.
Secondly, enhancing shared decision-making techniques will improve the patients’ participation in matters regarding their health for example having a chance to communicate with all parties involved in their treatment to ensure that all their health needs are expressed (Pacific, 2022). Nurses have to ensure that they access patients’ ability to participate and ensure that they discuss the shared decision-making procedure with these individuals to detect the process strengths as well as weaknesses. Healthcare professionals must ensure that they upheld high privacy to their patient data and information. This is a core value in health care to protect the data of the patients and respect their privacy.
Healthcare professionals can incorporate some other strategies to ensure that they promote patient rights, such strategies include the establishment of ethics programs which will help ensure health collaboration and enhanced decision making which are in the best practices of the patient. Through designating ethics champions will see healthcare professionals getting some rewards for their good work over time and this will greatly promote nursing ethics and facilitate ethical decision-making (Pacific, 2022). Lastly is to build awareness of the patient’s rights such as the issues of privacy and confidentiality of patient data which at times may be confusing. Recently the issue of patient data has been increasing and therefore there is a need to promote awareness on the same so that patients’ trust with their healthcare providers can be upheld.
Understanding the importance of upholding patients’ rights and the ways to promote the protection of patients’ rights is so important to scholars. It gives them a clear understanding of how to treat their patients and what they are supposed to do and what they are not required to do. Students have a chance to express their ideas on different strategies and what they think is paramount. This discussion topic gives the students a chance to understand in depth various advocacy agendas and key priorities for the AHA in 2023.
