Assignment Description

Assignment: Article Review Pre-Reading and First Reading Exercises
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to acclimate you to contemporary research in the discipline. The assignment requires that you review one of three pre-selected journal articles by examining the scholarly article’s strengths and weaknesses in terms of the stated purpose of the article. Ideally, in a full review, your writing would reflect descriiptions, paraphrases, and an analysis of the article. It would also include an application to course materials. Any analysis of an article should typically help readers to assess the article’s value without having to necessarily read the article themselves. To write a proper review, you should first read the article twice, at the very least. The assignment begins even before you write it.
Task: To prepare you for a full article review through course assignments, you are going to complete the pre-reading and first reading exercises below for one of the three pre-selected articles. To complete this activity, you will complete the pre-reading and first reading exercises by typing your response to the bullets and questions posed on a Microsoft Word Document that utilizes the headers of “Pre-Reading Exercise” and “First Reading Exercise”.
Pre Reading Exercise:
• What are your initial assumptions based on the title?
• What are your assumptions based on the sub-titles?
• After reading the abstract, what are your initial thoughts?
• Look over the references. Have you read any of the sources? Should you read any of the sources referenced? What do the sources referenced indicate?
• Search the Web for the author of the article. Is the author established in his/her field? Does the author speak with authority?
First Reading Exercise:
• Who is the author’s audience?
• What is the author’s purpose in writing the article?
• What is the author’s thesis or main argument?
Your completed assignment should be 1-2 pages double-spaced. It should also thoroughly address the bulleted areas above and should be written in APA style, 12 font, Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri.
Criteria: You will be successful at this assignment if you (a) dissect the article in a way that reflects thorough responses to the bulleted points in the pre-reading and first reading exercise (b) clearly present information as solicited by bulleted points. You will earn up to 20 points by completing this assignment. The following rubric will be used to arrive at the student’s final grade for the assignment:
