As with most professions in this rapidly changing world, advances in technology have created interesting problems to solve and new opportunities to explore for psychologists. Given the readings and your own knowledge of the technological advances in society, talk about either a problem you foresee or a place where technology can be used to improve on or advance the discipline of psychology. In particular, how might technology that is available to us now improve quality of care for individuals with mental illness?
Most forensic psychologists are clinical psychologists with forensic training, given that having a “genuine mental disorder” is part of the standards for competency to stand trial and mental status at the time of the offense (NGRI) evaluations. There are a lot of misconceptions about forensic psychology, including the efficacy and degree to which psychological profiles are evidence-based, all criminals having psychological problems, and psychiatric disorders getting criminal defendants out of serving time in jail or prison. What new information did you learn in this area that surprised you? What is something that you think people outside of psychology should know?
Psychologists operate by the APA Ethics Code (see Course Materials), which instructs psychologists to do no harm in its General Principles. Given what you’ve learned about the intersection between abnormal psychology and the law, what are some circumstances that you think might be difficult in terms of maintaining our ethical standards (i.e., adhering to the general principles of Beneficence and Nonmaleficence, Fidelity and Responsibility, Integrity, Justice, and Respect for People’s Rights and Dignity)?
