Discussion 1:
In this discussion, I would like to concentrate only on Standard 14-Quality of Practice, out of the assigned six standards. During my practicum experience, I have attended many meetings and different types of committees that monitor, evaluate, address, and try to improve the patient’s quality of care in the surgery and endoscopy department. In the 4th edition of the Scope and Standards of Practice, the Quality of Practice is numbered as number 15, but the requirements for nurses are similar. The Quality of Practice Standard asks for quality practice contributions to patient care, ensuring safe, efficient, timely, patient-centered, equitable, and evidence-based practice (EBP) care (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2021).
With the changes in reimbursement to value-based reimbursement, quality has become very important to the organization and organizational leaders. During my practicum, I was able to sit in on a couple of monthly Total Joint Improvement Team meetings. This team is made up of the department heads of the Operating Room (OR), Day Surgery Unit (DSU), Post-Anesthesia Recovery Unit (PACU), Surgical Unit, Case Management, orthopedic surgeons, anesthesia providers, Total Joint Nurse Leader, and the Director of Nursing for SJRMC. During the meetings, I witnessed the discussion of conflict resolutions, and how they went about changing the policies and practice guidelines within the organization related to the total joint surgeries. The readmission rate had increased to three-point eight percent when the benchmark for this kind of readmission must be two percent or below. This meeting looked into the existing issues and worked on solutions for improvement.
One of the other meetings is the Frontline Leadership Committee, which has aspects of improving the organization from within. This group picks 22 people that work throughout the facility and provide them with paid education (eight hours each month over ten months). The Frontline Leadership Committee helps this group of people to grow as frontline leaders to enhance their current departments, and hopefully, they will become future departmental leaders. This committee not only helps create leaders from within but also concentrates on quality improvement, which is vital to the organization.
The organization is working on performance improvement (PI), identifying opportunities to improve processes and outcomes (Leger & Dunham-Taylor, 2018). For process improvement, a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) board is used to track goals which include safety, quality, and financial goals, among others.

Discussion 2:
My clinical experiences have been vast and varied, but one topic that has struck me is the quality of practice. It is critical to be conscious of the quality of practice while caring for individuals to provide safe, effective, and high-quality healthcare. Equal access to exceptional healthcare is a right that everyone has, regardless of poverty, color, or anything else, and this necessitates that healthcare workers follow quality standards (Suikkala et al., 2021). Additionally, in specific settings, such as nursing homes, the standard of care is essential to guaranteeing that patients are given adequate care. Secondly, I have seen directly the reputation of resource utilization in my clinical practice. It is critical to assess resource consumption and find opportunities for improvement. This form of usage optimization is vital for efficient financial, administrative, and clinical practice management. I was a member of a task group charged with ensuring that the resources allotted for certain therapeutic services are utilized to achieve the best possible result for the patient population and to avoid needless waste.
Another area I have personally found to be enormously imperative is environmental health. Healthcare practitioners possess a distinctive opportunity to apply their expertise and understanding to recognize and address health and environmental concerns (Suikkala et al., 2021). I have engaged in conversations with policymakers and participated in guided dialogues regarding stratagems to enhance environmental health within a healthcare setting. Robison et al. (2022) research observed that the appropriate management of physical, chemical, and biological stressors could effectively mitigate and combat health hazards. The author has observed the favorable outcomes that can result from advocating for a lifestyle that prioritizes wellness and wholesome conduct. Based on my personal experience, it can be observed that quality of practice, resource utilization, and environmental health are interconnected, and the adequate provision of healthcare is contingent upon these factors. Enhancing the caliber of healthcare practices and optimizing resource allocation while advocating for ecological well-being are fundamental components of healthcare that are imperative for the efficacious provision of healthcare services.
