For this assignment, imagine you are a nurse-midwifery practice director who has been tasked with creating an evidence based protocol for the care of survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV), sexual assault, or physical abuse. This clinic is a hospital based practice in your local area with 4 other nurse-midwives. Adapt formatting as needed for any protocol or handout sections of the assignment. While you would not generally include in-text citations in a protocol or handout, please do include them for the purposes of this assignment. Any written reflection sections should be in APA format. Include a full reference list. All pages should be double spaced, with the exception of any patient handouts you create, which can simply be whatever format is visually appealing and user friendly.
Intimate Partner Violence Screening Protocol
Part 1: Research the recommended timing for screening for IPV in pregnancy & during routine gynecological care, validated screening tools, and optimal screening method (i.e. -on paper, by the medical assistant, by the provider, etc). Write a protocol for the nurse-midwives in your practice to follow including when to screen, which tool will be used, and how to screen. Also include in the protocol, what the expected steps are when a patient screens positive. The protocol should be approximately 1-2 pages.
Part 2: Create a patient-centered handout for those who screen positive for IPV. Include an evidence-based safety plan, resources in your local area that may be helpful, and what follow up will be recommended. This should be about 2-3 pages in length. Please be creative and design this in a way that would be helpful to patients.
Part 3: Discuss why you chose the screening tool, safety plan, screening method, and other components of your plan. Were there gaps in the literature you found? Explain. How did your protocol and patient handout address social determinants of health and/or healthcare disparities? Is the way you screen patients in clinical, or work as a nurse, evidence based? Why or why not? The discussion portion should be about 2-4 pages.
