Due Date: 11:59 pm EST Sunday of Unit 5
Points: 100
Overview:
Privilege is a right or exemption from liability or duty granted as a special benefit or
advantage. Oppression is the result of the use of institutional privilege and power,
wherein one person or group benefits at the expense of another. The objective of this
activity is to confront entrenched systems of power and privilege, and identify common
situations when privilege is not acknowledged, to the detriment of the disadvantaged
and oppressed.
Instructions:
• Read Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack by Peggy McIntosh.
o Why does McIntosh start her essay by saying “I was taught to see racism
only in individual acts of meanness, not in invisible systems conferring
dominance on my group.”? Why is this important for her to say?
o Which of the “daily effects of white privilege” in McIntosh’s list stands out
to you and why?
o How do we lessen the impact of our privilege or lack of privilege? Is this
required or desired? Why or why not?
• Watch and listen to Tim Wise: On White Privilege.
o Define privilege and include who has it and who does not.
o Explain why some people have privilege and others do not.
▪ Describe your privileges or lack thereof.
o Discuss how privilege leads to oppression.
Choose two (2) of the following to include:
• Where do these privileges come from? What can people with privilege do that
people without privilege can’t?
• Compare and contrast the cost of white privilege for persons of color and white
people.
