We are going to do a little something different this time around for your Puzzling with Peers exercise. You will actually use your peer group as an interpersonal communication case study.
Working as a team echoes so many professional scenarios. This is why we construct these peer groups and design experiences where you truly have to be collaborative. Many of you have had those group experiences where it’s like a canoe with six people but only one or two are rowing. In this class, we use groups as an actual place to study and develop interpersonal communication.
Here’s what to do:
Step 1: Review text regarding Confirming Climates and Confirming Communication concepts
Chapter 8 of Interpersonal Communication: Everyday Encounters.
Step 2: Consider the following…
How much of a confirming climate has your peer group been so far this term?
Support your answer by using ideas from the chapter (such as acknowledgment, endorsement, descriiptive communication, problem-oriented communication, etcetera).
Feel free to go back and look at your discussions in Modules 1-4 as evidence.
Step 3: Post your individual assessment of the group climate
Is it a confirming climate? Why?
Make sure to justify your assessment and to use concepts from the reading.
While there isn’t necessarily a “right” and “wrong” response, the best answer is going to be a well-supported answer that engages the chapter material and shows an understanding of the concepts.
Individual posts are due by Thursday 11:59 pm ET, but the earlier the better.
Step 4: Discuss responses to arrive at a consensus
Respond to all of the other members in your group, discussing the following:
where you agreed in your assessment and where you may have had different conclusions
where you overlapped and why
why you may have drawn different conclusions in some areas
things that others noticed that you didn’t
Work together here in a mutually collaborative manner—discussing, constructively debating, and problem-solving—with the goal of arriving at a group assessment that incorporates the various contributions.
Also, besides looking back at how you worked together in previous modules, try to notice the communication among the team in putting together this group answer. How does that further your thinking? Is it a confirming climate as you do this? Is there confirming communication? Hopefully, there will be, since you are already thinking about this.
