The field of nursing informatics (NI) combines nursing science with various information and analytical sciences to recognize, categorize, organize, and share data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. The use of technology at the point of care delivery, the external use of clinical information for quality, legal, and regulatory activities, and the use of analytics of data and metadata all contribute to the development of new nursing knowledge as electronic health information systems are integrated into every nursing role and setting.

I started my nursing career in 2008 as a second career; I have a degree in Statistics but did not work with it as I became interested in Nursing while finishing my degree in Statistics. Fast forward to 21 years after I got my Master’s in Statistics, I do not remember much. I have been working as a nurse and now as a nurse practitioner; the joy of being a Nurse is the connection with people. I did not think I could do that with my degree in Statistics. As a nurse, my experience with nursing informatics is mainly as a front-end user, using EMR for patient records and other services. With this backdrop, I admire all Nursing Informatics nurses, the ability to identify as a nurse and function in tech is highly admirable. The two most outstanding Nursing Informatic Innovators are Dr. Saba and Dr. Patricia Brennan.

Nursing Innovators and their contributions
Dr. Patricia Brennan has made significant contributions to the field of nursing informatics, she has a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and is also a registered nurse. She has concentrated on medical information technology that enhances patient safety and outcomes. She created ComputerLink, an electronic network that helps patients receiving home care feel less alone and take better care of themselves. She also worked with HeartCare, a personalized information and communication service based on the internet that aids cardiac patients who reside at home recover more quickly and with fewer symptoms. She is currently the director of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health and the first nurse, industrial engineer, and woman to be NLM director (AMIA, 2021; Association, n.d)
Additionally, Dr. Saba my second choice of Innovator, was one of the early pioneers in nursing Informatics, as she developed one of the first computerized systems for nursing documentation. She impacted many others to work in the field of nursing informatics. She has worked on standardizing nursing terminologies and integrating nursing knowledge into healthcare.
In conclusion, these innovators inspire me to continue to strive for excellence as a saa nurse and to continue acquiring knowledge in my quest to become a nursing leader and expert.
