You are the nurse manager on a busy medical-surgical unit. You have been requested to attend a hospital administration meeting with your Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and the hospital Chief Financial Officer. The CNO explains that nurse−patient staffing ratios on every unit are being increased, and your ratios must also increase by 1-2 patients on both the day and night shift. The CNO assures you this is a temporary issue due to the seasonal high census, and this decision is not open for debate. You are shocked and don’t know how to respond initially.

To demonstrate self-management and social competence to regulate my emotions in this scenario, I will:
Take a deep breath and pause before responding. This will give me time to calm down and collect my thoughts.
Be mindful of my body language and tone of voice. I will want to avoid appearing angry or upset.
Listen actively to the CNO’s concerns. I want to understand their perspective and why they are making this decision.
Express my concerns calmly and professionally. I will let the CNO know that I am concerned about the safety of my patients and staff with increased staffing ratios.
Be willing to negotiate. I am willing to work with the CNO to find a solution that works for everyone.
b) Discuss how you will respond to your CNO by using this leadership theory.
According to the Theory of Emotional Intelligence, leaders who are able to manage their own emotions and the emotions of others are more effective. In this scenario, I will use the following emotional intelligence skills to respond to my CNO:
Self-awareness: I will be aware of my own emotions and how they are impacting my behavior.
