Assignment Description

This week you will read about gender roles and sexual scripts. Please refer to Chapter 5’s Theories of Socialization [under Gender-Role Learning] and Contemporary Gender Roles and Scripts sections and study Chapter 9’s Sexual Scripts section of the Yarber & Sayad (2022) textbook. Then, you will be ready to analyze gender-role learning through socialization theories (i.e., cognitive social learning theory, cognitive development theory, social construction theory). Additionally, you will share media examples of traditional and contemporary sexual scripts. Your examples may come from commercials, YouTube influencers, movies, music videos or lyrics, etc.
Sexual behavior, like all other forms of social behavior, such as courtship, classroom behaviors, and sports, relies on scripts” (Yarber & Sayad, 2022, p. 251). Sexual scripts are sexual behaviors and interactions learned from one’s culture. In the TEDx Talks (2021), sex therapist Shelly Varod discusses the human sexual response cycle, pointing out the refractory period of males. Then, Varod proceeds to orate the human need to validate sexual behaviors/patterns, comparing experiences with sexual scripts. The media and pornography most frequently use traditional sexual scripts with an “end” goal of orgasm. What is the impact or potential consequences of comparing one’s sexual experiences with traditional sexual scripts and unrealistic portrayals in pornography?
Read about Gender-Role Learning and Contemporary Gender Roles and Scripts in Chapter 5, the Sexual Scripts section in Chapter 9, and watch sex therapist Shelly Varod’s TEDx Talks (2021). Then, please respond to the following question prompts in a minimum of 300-words in total. The 300-words do not include your APA 7 reference citations. Also, you do not need to write 300-words for each prompt; however, you should expect to write 300-words or more for all prompts.
Please support your analysis using the TEDx Talks (2021) and Yarber & Sayad (2022). For example, you may share a paraphrase or concise quote from the TEDx Talks (2021) or Yarber & Sayad (2022) eText. You may provide additional supportive details from a scholarly journal article or another credible source. Be sure to use APA 7 to cite the sources (in-text) you paraphrase or quote within your post. And at the end of your post, type the APA 7 reference citation(s). By responding to the question prompts, you will achieve learning objectives 1-3. & 1-4., & 4-3.
Think of a scenario from media you have recently seen that portrayed a traditional sexual script such as courtship, first date, first sexual encounter, long-term relationship, etc. First, briefly describe that scenario of a traditional sexual script you viewed. Then, use supportive details from the scenario to thoroughly address the following prompts:
How would Bandura’s cognitive social learning theory explain the actors’ gender role behaviors? Be sure to review the socialization theories.
How would Kohlberg’s cognitive development theory explain the actors’ gender role behaviors? Be sure to review the socialization theories.
Lastly, think of a scenario from media you have recently seen that portrayed a contemporary sexual script, such as courtship, first date, first sexual encounter, long-term relationship, etc. How would the social construction or queer theory explain the contemporary sexual script you recently saw portrayed in media (e.g., YouTube, Netflix, book)?
