Assignment Description

3000 words case study discussion.
Introduction (250 words)
In this section, please provide an overview of the case study and outline the main topics that you will be covering in your report. For example, you are likely to have a focus on Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), concussion, brain structures of interest (frontal lobe and affected sub-regions), cognitive and behavioural deficits, and neuroplasticity, so mentioning these focuses within the introduction would be recommended. To push further, consider outlining how biological psychology can aid our understanding of this area.
Provide a breakdown of the brain regions impacted in the case study and their links to behaviour/ cognition (2500 words)
• In this section, you should explore the biological psychology that relates to the case study. This would involve picking out how the reported brain regions (frontal lobe and sub-regions within it) are impacted by TBI (such as, concussions), with reflection back to cognition (e.g., memory loss, poor concentration as well as other executive dysfunctions) as well as behaviour (e.g., changes in personality, such as, irritability).
• It is important for you to address historical and contemporary theories and research with reference to the case specifics. For example, when discussing key theories or research, try to ensure that you cover some of the classic work that our current understanding is based upon. For the remainder of this section, however, focus upon contemporary (recent) research to support your arguments.
• Please ensure that you draw upon as much of the case study’s information as possible, and that you link back to the case study regularly throughout as you make your points.
• Try to ensure that you comment upon the methodologies that have been utilised within research in these related areas (e.g., brain imaging methods). This will allow you to comment upon how biological psychology can assist us in understanding the case study (and cases like it).
• It is important for you to also address the notion of neuroplasticity with reference to TBI, in order to address Miss J’s mother’s concern.
• Finally, you are encouraged to break the main body up into sub-sections.
Conclude how biopsychological explanations and research have better helped us understand the relationship between the featured brain regions/structures and their corresponding behavioural correlates (250 words)
Finally, present a concluding section that summarises the key topics that you have covered and how biological psychology has aided in the understanding of Miss J’s case study. The points that you raise here should not be new but should instead draw upon points that you made in the main body of your report.
The Case:
Case Study: Miss J
A 35-year-old woman (known as Miss J) has been diagnosed with traumatic brain injury following a concussion. Miss J experienced damage to her frontal lobe which was confirmed through neuroimaging scans. Since the concussion, she has presented with symptoms of memory loss, poor concentration as well as other executive dysfunctions. Her mother has also noticed that Miss J has become more irritable, with changes in personality which were not previously present. Prior to her injury, Miss. J had no history of other health or mental health related conditions. Miss J’s mother is concerned about her daughters cognitive and behavioural symptoms; however, she has been told that there are possible ways to help her daughter recover.
Please write a case study report that explores the role of the frontal lobe, and how sub-regions within the frontal lobe could be affected in relation to Miss J, and how damage could result in the cognitive and behavioural symptoms that she is presenting with. Additionally, please ensure that you address Miss. J’s mothers concern, with reference to neuroplasticity.
Remember that the core focus of this assignment is biological psychology. Links to other disciplines can help to support your arguments, but your primary emphasis should be upon the biological psychology relating to the case study.
