At a recent panel that I attended on the future health workforce, I asked one of the panelists, Dr. Michael H. Kanter (professor and chair of clinical science, Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine), what health informatics skills clinicians will need in the future. He replied that health informatics is essential to all professions in the healthcare workforce because data, information, and knowledge underlie all aspects of healthcare work and will continue to do so in the future. He also said that it is quite challenging to train current and future clinicians in health informatics because they need to know enough about the design of health information technologies and systems to provide designers, computer scientists, and other health information professionals with necessary input in how to design tools and systems that actually support their work.
Keeping these comments in mind, I’d like you to reflect on how this week’s material on human centered design could help you to communicate with health informatics professionals that you currently work with or might work with in the future. Feel free to describe past challenges or successes that you have had in working with health informatics professionals. What additional skills do you feel you need in order to work effectively with health informatics professionals?
