Field Report: Heuristics
Overview
Task: Follow the instructions to conduct a study of heuristics. Write a report on your findings and interpretations.
Purpose: Explore several heuristics—including representativeness, availability bias, counter-factual thinking, and framing.
Instructions
This activity requires some coordination with other people. Start early and leave enough time to find participants, follow the instructions below and complete it.
Follow these steps:
1. Download and study the Activity Handout ( Activity Handout: Accessible Version ). prior to meeting with participants.
2. Recruit four participants for this study.
Meet with each participant either individually or in a group. (Meetings can be face-to-face or virtual.)
Participants should not talk with each other during the meeting.
3. Download and Send Handout for Participants #1 to two participants.
4. Download and Send Handout for Participants #2 to two participants.
NOTE: There is a slight difference between the two handouts. Do NOT point this out to your participants.
5. Download Field Report Template ( Field Report Template: Accessible Version ). Rename the document as your own and use the prompts and suggestions to guide your writing. You MUST explain concepts in your own words to avoid a high Turnitin score.
Instructions

Discussion section should describe the extent responses were consistent with heuristics and expected/not expected. Include relevant behaviors or comments made.

Implications section should explain what concepts the student saw demonstrated in this activity. The student should describe two heuristics used or not used. Students should also describe implications for ways people formulate judgments.

Peer Feedback Section should include a paraphrasing of the feedback received (not an exact copy) and include what the student did or did not do as a result of the feedback. Regarding the reviews the student provided to others, they should include an observation or insight about how reviewing the work of others’ impacted or changed their perspective.
