Latoya Davis In 2001 Andrea Yates murdered her 5 children by drowning them in the family bathtub. This case was a very high profile case and had much media attention. Seeing that Andrea murdered her children she would fall under the Filicide homicide category. Filicide involves cases in which parents kill their children (DeLis, Schwartz, & Klein, 2020). Also Andrea falls under Felony homicide category. Felony homicide is a homicide that occurs during the commission of another felony, occurs as a form of instrumental aggression (DeLis, Schwartz, & Klein, 2020). In our reading we see that instrumental aggression is said to be a means to an end. In the case Andrea later said that she killed her children to save them from hell. This shows that her religious beliefs also played a factor in the murder. Since Andrea did her own children none of the other demographic factors played a part in the murder such as age, race, gender or socioeconomic background. In the reading it does discuss connections with homicides and ages of the offenders. When examining homicide cases in which a perpetrator has been identified, approximately 54% of homicide perpetrators are aged 20 to 34, with more than three quarters of this group falling under age 29 (FBI, 2018). Also it is said that more than half of female offenders kill intimate partners or family. In my case Andrea Yates falls into that demographic from killing her children. In most cases when you look back at the life of the offender you see abuse, violence and trauma. Factors that would lead people to see why the offender ended up commiting the crime. For Andrea it is said that she was a successful nurse who was a very bright individual. Yates first began showing signs of mental illness after the birth of her first child.
