Purpose: One of my goals in this course is to introduce students to ideas that can potentially change the way that they view their life or the world. Positive psychology and Stress and Health Psychology both addresses how social support and a sense of belonging in a community are associated with good health, happiness, and longevity. Social support and community connectedness are also essential in all Blue Zone areas. This assignment is also tied to Psychology 2510-Learning Outcome #7, Students will be able to apply psychological principles to change their lives, organizations, or communities in positive ways. A goal of this assignment is for you to compare your lifestyle with the Blue Zones lifestyle and to make any necessary changes that would lead to a healthier, happier, or longer life.
Task: Your task is to answer the following questions based on the work of Dan Buettner. Buettner pioneered the idea that there are 5 blue zones or countries where people tend to live the healthiest and the longest in the world. The average age is about 100 years old!
To begin, your task is to: (1) Do a Google search: blue zones project//.gov (2) then click on: Blue Zones NCBI (NCBI means National Center for Biotechnology Information which is a part of the United States Library of Medicine (NLM) which is a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)). (3) Read the article, “Blue Zones: Lessons from the World’s Longest Lived.” (4) Finally, answer the following questions with a 4-6 complete sentence response for each question. Each question is worth 4 points. Please number the questions with your response.
1. Who is Dan Buettner and specifically name the five Blue Zones? 2. Identify four factors that the Blue Zones have in common? Refer to the Power 9. Please number and explain.
3. Do Blue Zones drink coffee? (Refer to Google: bluezones.com) Please explain.
4. In keeping with a Blue Zone lifestyle, identify two areas in your life that you could improve and how you will improve them towards the Blue Zones philosophy. 5. What gives you a sense of purpose? You may have to think about this carefully if you have never thought about this before.
6. Do you have any daily rituals, explain? If not, name and explain one that you could adopt.
7. The Blue Zones make time to Down shift. What is your most effective strategy for managing stress? If you do not have one, name and explain one of the Blue Zones stress management strategies that you could adopt.
8. Name and explain two things that you feel grateful for, and which contribute to your happiness. Are these things part of the Blue Zones philosophy? 9. Go to https://www.bluezones.com/recipe/Name the recipe and explain why it is part of the Blue Zones and copy and paste the recipe.
10. People move naturally in the Blue Zones. Take a 20-minute walk or bike ride outside your neighborhood or park (or look from your window if you are not able to walk or bike ride) and notice something from nature that makes you feel calm. Upload a picture (or give a description of the object) and where it was found.
Criteria for Success: Your assignment will be graded based on the following criteria: (a) Do you have a 4-6 complete sentence response for each question that is free of spelling and grammar errors? (b) Is your posting a good integration of the content and ideas from the Blue Zones document? (c) Did you provide an answer to all the questions that are clear to the reader?
