Competencies come from learning and experience to show areas of weakness and strengths. Some of my strengths are trust and Influence, the ability to influence others towards goals and change. I am a people person and very down to earth; however, I also have no problem with confrontation. The ability to influence has many opportunities to bring change throughout staff members towards organizational goals. Influence has become a strength through fairness, treating people with respect, and genuinely caring. Another strength, just culture. The ability to provide equality and delegate through fairness. Everyone has a bad day at some point and we are only human. Humans make mistakes. Which brings me to my last example of a strength, decision-making. The ability to see a situation and provide a solution in a calm manner. These two strengths can go hand in hand when dealing with staff members. I have been a charge nurse many times that has allowed me to use these strengths to bring change, influence, and provide a just equality of opportunity, and workplace. I believe people want to see someone who is fair, honest, and willing to do the work. AS for my weaknesses, these areas need to be fine-tuned. Financial management and economics of organizations are not my forte. These areas are not well defined through a charge nurse role. In addition, regulation and policy are other areas of weakness that are in need of further education. It is easy to follow policies and regulations, but to know the why and how are what will be strength to encourage others to follow that. My goal to integrate, develop, and comprehend my clinical practicum will be through the next several weeks of class literature/reading and spending time with my preceptor on site. Having the ability to attend leadership meetings and rounding will provide firsthand experience and witnessing the implementation of goals and strategies. Moreover, many opportunities to pick my preceptors brain and ask questions. I believe watching and learning are key factors to integrating goals and strategies. In addition, utilizing my resources for ideas and guidance in the development and integrating process for topic ideas and project plans.
