It is important for nurse leaders to engage with other nurse leaders to understand professional roles; a practice experience is assigned to achieve this end. It is expected that you will spend 8-10 hours with the nurse leader, shadowing them in their position, observing them go about their day, and interviewing them. The interview can take place before, during, or after the shadow period or can be on a different day.
You will engage with and interview a nurse leader in person. You should begin thinking about this activity as soon as possible and identify how you will identify and gain access to the interview.
Write an APA essay of 1700 words. Include a title page and reference page in APA format. These do not count towards the minimum word count for this assignment. Your essay must include an introduction and a conclusion under an Introduction and Conclusion headings. Your essay should have at least two scholarly references in addition to the textbook. Please be sure to cite the interview in APA format.

Person that was interviewed: Ms.H, Assistant Director of Nursing
I interview Ms. H, who is the Assistant Director of Nursing of Cascades at Galveston Assisted Living and Long Term Care. I was connected to Ms.H by one of my coworkers, Ms.A, who is also a nurse and knows Ms. H. The interview took place at Clearview Assisted Living and Long Term Care on February 7, 2023 during her 8 hour shift as she had agreed to be observed throughout her day of work.
Please describe the nursing and inter-professional teams that operate in this facility/on this unit. Mrs. H by explaining to me that her duties as an Assistant Director of Nursing is assessing, planning, facilitating, coordinating care, evaluation, and advocating for the necessary care options and services the clients and family need while staying in this facility. Ms. H manages an interdisciplinary team of eight LVN nurses, four medication aids, twenty CNAs and six dietary personnel.
Can you provide an example of a nursing practice that has been changed in the last year based on current best evidence? Infection control and Covid 19 patient care
Please identify the impact of change within your organization and your role as leader/manager in this change process. More regulatory documentation, visitor screening regulation, infection control, constant retraining to all staff and support as CDC kept updating Covid-19 mandates
Please identify strategies used for fiscal and human resources that contribute to the organization’s ability to deliver quality cost-effective patient-centered care. Due to nursing shortage with Covid-19 pandemic our organization uses staffing agencies for support to fullfill shortage of employees, we also believe and focus on trainning, reinforcement and support for all our employees to deliver cost effective patient-centered care There must be constant training and evaluation of staffs’ knowledge and skills as well as patient progress as often as possible to ensure that every effort works towards warranting excellent outcomes for our patients
Technology/Informatics? Ms. H says her organization uses PointClickCare Software for charting and documenting. She stated that it was easy to navigate for her and her team
What do you consider your biggest challenge as a leader/manager? Getting other higher executives and upper management to listen to me and successful management of staff was very challenging to her; however, with experience and continued learning, she came to overcome every barrier that hindered her work.
What do you love most about your job? I love having the ability to critically think and be autonomous in decision-making when doing care planning and identifying problems that arise with the client
Why did you choose this job? she wanted to be a leader in her career while helping others in her team
What other kinds of nursing/other job did you ever do? Ms. H has been a Nurse for 23 years. She worked as an ortho/neuro nurse, wound care nurse, and skilled nurse in acute care in Memorial Herman for seven years.
How would you describe your company’s culture? Overall, Ms. H is happy at her position, The connection within the organization provides the nurses with an opportunity to share their ideas while working as one team.
How would you describe your role in admission and staffing decisions? Mrs. H asserted that she plays a crucial role in admission and staffing decisions because as an assistant director of nursing she has to advocate and knows what stress the staffs are enduring during their shifts on the floor and their needs thus must communicate to the CEO about their concerns. Hence recruiting and interviewing is also part of my duties as I have to see the best fit for the team I supervise.
