Purpose:
The ability to influence others requires leaders to fully understand themselves. The Leadership Skills Assessment Part 1 & 2, and reflection will help you assess your personality traits and ability to distinguish what being a leader is about. This will affect patient care, leadership development, work teams and interpersonal relationships. As a leader it is important to understand yourself in order for you to understand how to apply the concepts of transformational leadership in personal and professional pursuits.
Process:
Complete Leadership Characteristics and Skills Assessment Part 1 and 2 in Grossman & Valiga textbook.
2. Choose one leadership characteristic from the Leader Characteristics list in your Grossman & Valiga textbook (p. 35) that you believe is
highly valuable. Describe how this characteristic can help you transition into being an effective nurse leader at the “bedside”.
Self- Analysis and Reflection
Using the results of your self-assessments (from the class textbook) write a reflective essay that addresses the following:
Include your scores of the 2 self-assessments from your textbook (perception of what makes a good leader and perception of your own ability to lead) and analyze the results. Discuss whether you know what makes for a good leader and discuss perception of your own ability to lead based on the results.
Describe one leadership characteristic that you believe is highly valuable and evaluate how having this characteristic will help you transition into being an effective “bedside” nurse leader.
Describe what you believe is your current leadership style and how this may affect your ability to advocate for quality patient care. Discuss the leadership style you would prefer to have and the reason the preferred leadership style may be more effective. (If you already have the leadership style you desire, describe how you demonstrate this leadership style in clinical).
Develop two specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely (“SMART”) goals for future growth and development as a leader who can advocate for quality client care.
This self-reflection essay paper should be no more than 4 pages (including the cover page and reference page), in APA format. Minimum of 1 references (textbook).
