No unread replies. 14 14 replies.
View the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
Your individual contribution
Choose one movie character for your analysis of his/her power. The name of your group is one of the movie characters, but you may choose any character you like for your analysis. Create a post stating which character you have chosen. Characters will be chosen on a first-come, first-served basis. The first person to post a character’s name will analyze that character. No two members of a group may analyze the same character. Your post with your chosen character’s name (not your complete analysis).
Using the RICE acronym described in Chapter 4 of Hocker and Wilmot, analyze your chosen character’s interpersonal power currencies as demonstrated in the film.
Your analysis should thoroughly examine your character’s power currencies and should address how his/her currencies affect his/her interaction in conflict in the film. The word count for your analysis should be around 400-500 words. If you include quotes from the movie, do not include them in your word count.
Creating your group product
The first person to post his/her analysis will be the group leader. This person should appoint an editor and class liaison for your group and should lead the group in its discussion and in creating its final product and a timeline for completion of the final product for this assignment.
As a group, decide which character has the most interpersonal power based on the analysis done by your group members. Once the choice has been made, the group leader should open a Canvas collaboration that the group will use to work together to make improvements in the analysis.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR GROUP LEADERS: When creating your Canvas collaboration, invite your group members and your instructor(s) individually by name. Do not invite the name of your group. (Since there may be more than one section of the course, there will be groups in other sections with the same name as yours, so inviting by the group name causes confusion.)
All members should make a significant contribution to this effort.
The editor will check the final product for grammar, punctuation, and APA compliance. Cite and reference your sources when appropriate. The movie must be properly cited.
The word count for your group’s final product should be about 600-700 words. This does not include quotes from the movie or your references.
When the editor is finished proofreading, each individual group member should type his/her name and his/her role in the group at the top of the first page. This signifies that you have read over the analysis and are satisfied with the final product.
The class liaison will post your group’s completed analysis to the class discussion board on the following page.
As individuals, all group members should read and comment on the final posts made by other groups. This will be assessed on the class discussion page.
After you are done with my post you need to come up with 2 responses for other students posts. Here are the other students posts.
1. For this discussion on picking a character from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, I picked Norrington because I thought he showed a decent amount of power throughout the movie, being he was the Commodore. Below is my RICE acronym on Norrington.
Resource Control (Hocker et al., 2021): In the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Norrington was promoted to Commodore of Port Royal at the beginning. Meaning he is an officer of high ranking. So for resource control, he holds a formal position that brings him valuable resources and power through leadership. Overall, this position brings him the most power and helps with conflicts by having a say and even ordering the Governor around. For example, a specific conflict Norrington had where his power was apparent was when the pirates attacked Port Royal to get the gold necklace. Norrington admittedly takes control and orders his officers to fight back. Then he sees Governor Swann and orders him to take cover in his office.
Interpersonal Linkages (Hocker et al., 2021): Norrington had the support of Governor Swann, Elizabeth Swann, and the other officers. With that support, he had power. The Governor thought of him as a fine man and wanted his daughter Elizabeth to marry him. So having that support gave him even more power as a person because the interpersonal linkage is about having a solid support system and about whom is among those supporters. The most promising interpersonal linkage he had was with the Governor as a supporter. Because the Governor is of high ranking, Norrington has that to his accessibility.
Communication Skills (Hocker et al., 2021): Norrington leads his officers throughout the movie. He led them with excellent and strong communication skills as they went on multiple missions throughout the movie. For example, when he leads his crew in a search party for Elizabeth, and at the beginning of the movie, when talking to Elizabeth about wanting to marry her. Also, when she turned him down at the end of the movie. Throughout, he had decent communication skills. Those skills improved at the end of the movie, with him more understanding of Jack Sparrow.
Expertise (Hocker et al., 2021): Norrington has expert power in being the Commodore because his leadership is needed among the officers. He had exceptional knowledge, skills, and talents he used as a Commodore.

2. I chose Captain Jack Sparrow for the Power character discussion based on the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Jack Sparrow is the lead character of the movie and portrays different types of power throughout the entire movie. Below is my RICE acronym for Jack Sparrow.
Resource Control (Hocker et al., 2021): In the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Captain Jack Sparrow demonstrates Resource Control when he meets with Joshamee Gibbs and ask for his help to support and bring a crew of Pirates onboard the ship he had been given to save Elizabeth Swann. Their ultimate goal is to rescue Elizabeth Swann who was kidnaped by Hector Barbossa and onboard the Black Pearl Ship. The majority of the crewman were supportive of the task with the exception Anamaria. When Anamaria asked what she would get for the support Sparrow reluctantly said, the ship. He used his resource power to get her to agree to join the crew.
Interpersonal Linkages (Hocker et al., 2021): An example of how Sparrow used Interpersonal Linkages was when he partnered with Will Turner. He knew that Will’s blood was what Hector Barbossa wanted and he used his skills in connecting Will to Barbossa so that ultimately, he would get what he wanted which was to be the captain of the Black Pearl once again. Sparrow, having Will as a partner also helped him in fighting his battle to win the fight against Barbossa. In the end Sparrow used this linkage to help him become a fee man after Turner pronounces his love to Elizabeth Swann.
Communication Skills (Hocker et al., 2021): Jack Sparrow displays a plethora of communications skill throughout the movie. The first scene of the movie is when he communicates with the deck hand and is overlooked that he did not tie up his boat. He then communicates with the two soldiers guarding the ship in a way that distracts them from doing their job so that he could sneak on the boat. He communicates with Joshamee Gibbs to help him form a crew that will successfully lead them to overtake the Black Pearl. Sparrows’ stellar communication skills towards Hector Barbossa at the end of the movie is what ultimately became the demise of Barbossa.
Expertise (Hocker et al., 2021): Sparrow was called the worst captain ever by James Norrington while he onboarded the ship that Sparrow and his crew were trying to take over. After Sparrow made an epic move to have Norringtons crew onboard their ship and Sparrows crew board the larger more robust ship that Norrington came from he then retreated his message by saying that Sparrow was the best Captain he has ever seen. Throughout the movie you see Jack Sparrow using a robust amount of expertise to get in and out of the predicaments he faces.
