The assignment should have a minimum of 10 scholarly references. References should be timely: published within the previous five (5) years.
For this assignment, you will be presenting on a problem in the institution where you work or at an institution where you are precepting or plan to work. Ultimately, this assignment builds a case for why change is needed and why administration should accept your proposed solution. It needs to be well researched and thorough. The following steps outline what you need to include in your presentation.
Step 1: Approved topic (This has been approved by faculty and will be used for this assignment) :
Problem Identification: Nurses working in mental health facilities experience high levels of stress. That is due to their close encounter with patients, making them more susceptible to burnout and affecting their quality of life. Burnout among nurses increases their risk of developing mental health symptoms as more nurses working in mental health environments are often diagnosed with mental health disorders, including major depressive disorder. The problem is crucial as it impacts patient outcomes, including patient safety and the quality of care, and results in an additional cost for the patient and the healthcare organization.
Current Situation: There is a limited provision for treating burnout in mental health nurses. There are no standardized or specialized burnout treatments for them. Besides, the available treatment options seem inadequate – they are poorly utilized and not readily accessible.
Proposed Evidence-Based Solution: Evidence-based attention-based training program implementation to mitigate burnout and associated symptoms and improve the quality of life for mental health nurses.
Impact of Policy Change: Following the implementation of the attention-based program, there was a significant reduction in burnout and associated symptoms. Emotional exhaustion was significantly reduced by 59% compared to the baseline – before the program implementation. Significant stress and anxiety reductions were observed with participants demonstrating appreciable sleep improvement and improved heartbeat variability and resting heart rate. Furthermore, the intervention resulted in pro-inflammatory cytokine expression improvement. The attention-based program positively impacted the healthcare staff’s burnout improvement compared to those that did not receive it (Dunne et al., 2019). Burnout has adverse impacts on patient outcomes – patient safety and care satisfaction. It results in unnecessary readmissions, hospital stays, and costs for patients and the healthcare organization. Step 2: Introduction.
Briefly introduce your business case idea. Identify the organization’s mission and/or vision statements. Describe how your project is in alignment with these organizational values.
Step 3: Problem Identification. See above for guidance
Identify your approved business case problem. Further discuss the issue by addressing the following:
A. causative factors (eg, staffing, inefficient processes, suboptimal equipment, outdated policies, etc.)
B. impact of this problem on your organization, staff, and/or clients (eg, suboptimal outcomes, wasted materials, prolonged stays or readmissions, burnout).
C.the estimated incidence and cost of the problem for your particular scenario
Additional organization-specific data that supports the existence and impact of the
problem may be included as relevant. These may be monetary figures, percentages,
and statistics.
Step 4: Evidence-Based Solution.
Identify your approved evidence-based solution. Present the results of current evidence (last 5 years) that demonstrates the effectiveness of this solution for your problem. This may include information from research studies, clinical practice guidelines, and peer-reviewed articles.
Use the data from the evidence and the incidence and cost that were identified in
Problem Identification to calculate the following:
A. how much can this solution reduce the incidence of the problem?
B. how much money could be saved as a result?
Step 5: Implementation Planning.
Present and provide an overview of a completed work breakdown structure (WBS) diagram that addresses each of the following:
A. the major task categories needed
B. the subtasks needed to achieve the above
C. the material, supplies, and equipment needed
D. the labor, staffing, and/or human resources needed
Present tasks in sequential order and include the steps needed from approval to full implementation. Consider the need for project teams or committees, interdisciplinary work, policy creation or revision, physical space, equipment, technology, and staff education, for example. Levels I-III should be addressed in your physical diagram. Level IV information can be discussed verbally (See assignment video and exemplars.)
Step 6: Budget Planning (This is where the 1 chart/graph would go)
Present and discuss a completed budget table with line items that address each of the following:
A. name of expense
B. cost for each unit of measure
C. total number of units needed
D. total cost for each expense
Your WBS will give you what you need to complete this well if it is also completed well. Your budget should include the costs of the (a) tasks, (b) subtasks, (c) physical materials, and (d) labor identified in your WBS. Examples include the cost to educate staff, the time of your implementation team, care and technology equipment, salaries and recruitment costs if hiring, physical space, etc., as applicable.
Use real figures. Articles, organizational employees, and web searches may be needed. The table should be organized so that it is easy to see how you arrived at the figures. Place the total cost of the project at the bottom of the table.
Step 7: Evaluation.
A evaluation plan must be created to measure success. The evaluation has to address both quality measures (patient outcomes) and financial measures (return on investment).
A. Quality Measures.
Identify and discuss the (a) outcome, (b) process, and (c) structure measures of your project. First, identify the outcome measures (goals/benchmarks/metrics) that you intend to achieve. Then identify your goals for process measures (or what observations in care delivery would signify staff compliance with your plans). Lastly, identify the structure measures that promote the success of your project and any weaknesses in structure that need to be addressed. Clearly discuss which measures you consider to be your outcome, process, and structure measures. Outcome and process measures must be measurable. Review your Required Resources for further assistance.
B. Return on Investment (ROI).
Using a one (1) year time frame, demonstrate how your project is cost saving or revenue generating by calculating an ROI. Use the incidence and cost figures from Steps 3 and 4 and the total cost to implement your project from your budget in Step 7 to fill in the ROI formula. Explain your work by briefly comparing the cost of the current situation to the the cost of the new plan, how much money would be gained or saved by implementing your plan, and how or where those cost will be recouped (eg, decreased length of stay). See ROI assistance in Required Resources. Math must be clearly presented on slide.
Step 8: Market Analysis
Present a completed SWOT analysis and give an overview of the relevant findings. You may format this as you see fit. Each component must be included and addressed. See the required resource on completing a SWOT analysis for a healthcare organization. This resource poses questions that help you identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats affecting your project. You know your organization better than anyone; don’t be afraid to think outside the box.
Step 9: Dissemination.
The last step in the QI process is not just evaluating your results but sharing your project, experience, and results with others.
A. Discuss the relevance of disseminating QI results.
B. Identify a conference to present your results or a journal to submit a manuscriipt to.
Explain why the dissemination method best suits your project’s dissemination goals.
