OP Ed Assignment
Consider this final assignment to be a culminating activity that will draw on your knowledge of and connection to assigned readings, class dialogue, and personal reflections on early childhood education and care policy. You are expected to include references to and quotes from course readings as well as at least three (3) outside references to current literature/research.
This is an opportunity for you to write on an early learning and child care policy issue that you are passionate about, but in a manner that educates and informs the reader, for the purpose of advocacy. You may choose to delve deeper into the policy issues you addressed in your “If I were the Minister of Education…” introduction post. The purpose of an op ed is to garner support and change opinions within a very short paper. Therefore, it is imperative that the prose must be succinct, authoritative, and use professional (but not overly academic) language that conveys expertise in the area.
What is an Op Ed?
An op-ed (originally short for “opposite the editorial page” although often taken to stand for “opinion editorial”) is a written prose piece typically published by a newspaper or magazine which expresses the opinion of a named author, usually not affiliated with the publication’s editorial board.
Good Op-Ed examples:
Merenda, Elena. “Modernized sex-ed empowers kids to have control over their bodies.” Globe and Mail. 23 August 2018.
Couto, Joe. “Between two worlds: gay cops and Pride.” The Star. 24 June 2018.
Vaccarino, Franco. “Legal Cannabis is Coming. Let’s Make Sure We’re Educated About the Risks.” Globe and Mail. 14 March 2018.
