How did Native American healing practices and Western or European healing practices interact with on another in the 17th and 18th centuries? Were they in conflict? Were they aligned with one another? How and why does the political setting matter for the exchange (or lack of exchange) of knowledge and therapeutic practices, as well as diseases, between the two groups?
Could you imagine being an anti-inoculation crusader during the 1721 smallpox epidemic? Why or why not? Does the controversy remind you of debates over vaccination today?
Charles Rosenberg wrote, “In some ways, a disease does not exist until we have agreed that it does, by perceiving, naming, and responding to it.” What do you make of this? How do you think inoculation changes the way smallpox is framed?
