Assignment 1: Paper and Presentation required.
You will write a paper and corresponding presentation. The paper should be a minimum of 800 words and not more than 1000. Use sub-heads to divide up your paper. The purpose of this excercise is to get you all in a good place to move forward in the class. I have read almost all of your critical papers from HAP 301, I have taught this class before and I think it is best for all of us that we start fresh. Moving on from this assignment we will dive into the different aspects of healthcare management from a business perspective. Culminating in a basic business plan that will include a break-even and/or feasibility analysis, e.g. bringing on more staff, leasing new equipment. I am not an English major and I am not expecting you to write perfectly worded essays. This is a business course. If you end up summarizing and using lots of bullet points, that is fine-and-dandy.
The presentation should not exceed 5 minutes. Practice before you present. Put your talking points in the powerpoint notes section (note: often there are problems w/ the audio/codec so if there are notes then I can just read through them). It makes your life and my life much easier. Make sure to double-check that your presentation works, replay to yourself.
Topic: MACRO Analysis of the US Health Care System
Description: Use you knowledge from HAP 301 to give a macro/top-level review of the US Healthcare system. You can use any sources you want as long as they are legit. You can use the supplied textbook, journal articles, videos (e.g. CMS has a ton that are helpful). Make sure to insert your take on the significance. Note, there isn’t a right or wrong answer. Every penny has two-sides and each of these elements can even be multifaceted. I will not be grading you on your position, I just want to see that you understand the dynamic. For example, about one quarter of all Medicare spending goes toward care for people during their last year of life.
Items to include
Patient Populations with corresponding segments, ex, gender, age groups, top 10 disease statesGive ratios, counts, segments, you can use charts and graphs
Overview of Payors, e.g. Commercial/Private, Medicare, MedicaidDon’t forget healthcare spend on each

Make sure to include forecasts on the Medicare Trust going belly-up. This is a major point
