Everyone’s talking about ChatGPT—another new disruptive technology! How will it affect us and our work? Who knows—after all, we still haven’t grappled with all of the consequences of the technology we already have.
Speaking of which, briefly describe an experiment you could run that would test one of these hypotheses (you can pick either one):
People asked to work on a cognitively demanding (that is, complicated or difficult) task will perform worse if their smartphones are within their visual field while they’re working on the task (in other words, when they can see their smartphones) than if their smartphones are hidden from view.
People who are made to think about or read something related to social rejection will feel more of an urge to check their smartphones than people who are made to think about or read something related to being socially accepted.
Again, come up with an idea for a study to test one of those hypotheses. In your paper, in addition to describing how the experiment would be conducted, explicitly state—
1. How you operationalized your independent variable and how you operationalized your dependent variable (see pp. 78-79 in the Dunn readings),
2. Whether your experiment is between-subjects or within subjects (see pp. 92-104 in the Dunn readings and the class slides from 1/26), and
3. Just to show that you know a good experiment from a bad one, come up with an idea for a confound you could include in your experiment that would mess it up and make it less valid (see the class slides from 1/26)! For example, one way would be to run all males in one condition and all females in the other. But now you can’t use that idea…
