Can you live for one month on $1000? What if you have a child? What if your job is precarious and you don’t know whether you will still have it from week to week? What if you have a parent who needs financial assistance? What if…. (and the possibilities are endless)
Nurses care for patients across the broadest of socioeconomic continuums. It is critical that nurses understand the financial burdens that patients face that may affect their ability to care for their health care (and/or the health of the family). This exercise helps the student to understand how complicated financial management can be for individuals living paycheck-to-paycheck. Directions:
Take part in the Spent activity at SPENT (playspent.org)go through it several times to see if you can “beat” the game of living on $1000 per month. The scenario changes with each answer.
Complete a one (1) page reflection and upload it to the drop box. Answer these questions thoroughly:Once you understood the way Spent is played, what did you expect? (e.g. did you expect you could make choices that would help you live for one month on $1000 easily?)
