RESEARCH & COMPARE – Now that you have learned in the course content about Ruby Paine’s Framework for Understanding Poverty, your task is to criticize it! Do your own research to find a resource or two online that critique this framework and that do not agree with it. Use the SES Worksheet to fill in the comparison chart. On one side, list something that the Framework for Understanding Poverty teaches. On the other side, list a critique of that teaching or view. Why might that teaching be incorrect? What could be wrong with it? What is it missing? Make sure you include your sources in your assignment and do not copy (paraphrase in your own words.)

The module content articles and videos are teaching about Ruby Paine’s model and theories. Use this information to fill in ideas on the left side column. You can write anything she teaches or believes about poverty and the “culture of poverty”. Then, research online to find anything that does not agree. You could google “Criticism of Ruby Paine’s Culture of Poverty” to start. List this as one of your resources used. You can use your own ideas and ideas from resources you find to argue another side. Her critics think the model is too simplified and does not consider racism or resiliency, for example. Look at what you wrote in the left column. Ask yourself why this may not be true or accurate. What could be another perspective? Write how/why in the right-hand column.
This assignment requires deeper skills and thinking, as you won’t just look up direct answers. You’ll research to find resources, compare them to what you’ve learned (Ruby), and use them to make arguments and draw conclusions. There are no specific “right answers,” and your own reflection is needed. Being able to evaluate theories and models about families and see other perspectives is a professional skill. Some students like “reflective application” assignments better, and other students find them a lot more challenging. Give it a try! Please double-check that you have submitted the correct, completed document, as I can not accept assignments after the close date.
