Purpose
The purpose of the graded collaborative discussions is to engage faculty and students in an interactive dialogue to assist the student in organizing, integrating, applying, and critically appraising scholarly literature. Meaningful dialogue among faculty and students fosters the development of a learning community as ideas, perspectives, and knowledge are shared. This discussion will support the professional formation of the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner role.
Course Outcomes
This discussion enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
• CO 3: Apply knowledge of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in prescribing psychopharmacotherapy. (PO 1)
• CO 4: Analyze factors pertinent to making the most effective drug selection for a client with a specific diagnosis in the mental health care setting. (POs 1, 2)
• CO 5: Identify the most commonly prescribed agents in the major psychopharmacologic drug classes. (POs 1, 2)
• CO 6: Analyze client indicators of therapeutic, ineffective, adverse responses and side effects to psychopharmacotherapy. (PO 1)
Due Date
Initial posts are due to the discussion forum by Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Instructor and peer responses are due by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Students must post on a minimum of two separate days. A 10% late penalty will be imposed for discussions posted after the deadline Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT, regardless of the number of days late. NOTHING will be accepted after 11:59 p.m. MT on Sunday (i.e., the student will receive an automatic 0).

Preparing the Discussion
Follow these guidelines when completing each component of the discussion. Contact your course faculty if you have questions.
General Directions
Review the provided case study to complete this week’s discussion.
Include the following sections:
1. Application of Course Knowledge: Answer all questions/criteria with explanations and detail.
a. Select one drug to treat the diagnosis(es) or symptoms.
b. List medication class and mechanism of action for the chosen medication.
c. Write the prescriiption in prescriiption format.
d. Provide an evidence-based rationale for the selected medication using at least one scholarly reference. Textbooks may be used for additional references but are not the primary reference.
e. List any side effects or adverse effects associated with the medication.
f. Include any required diagnostic testing. State the time frame for this testing (testing is before medication initiation or q 3 months, etc.). Includes normal results range for any listed laboratory tests.
g. Provide a minimum of three appropriate medication-related teaching points for the client and/or family.
2. Integration of Evidence: Integrate relevant scholarly sources as defined by program expectations:
a. Cite a scholarly source in the initial post.
b. Cite a scholarly source in one faculty response post.
c. Cite a scholarly source in one peer post.
d. Accurately analyze, synthesize, and/or apply principles from evidence with no more than one short quote (15 words or less) for the week.
e. Include a minimum of two different scholarly sources per week. Cite all references and provide references for all citations.
