Political Competency
“Political” can refer to anything having to do with the administration of a state or with the policies and procedures of a specific political party” While the capacity to execute something successfully or efficiently” is the definition of “competence.” The term “political competency” would indicate “to do something connected to the government or views or strategies of a certain officially incorporated or efficiently” if these two words were combined (Cervera-Gasch et al., 2022).
An influential nurse in politics advocates for changes that better the nursing field, patient care, and society norms. Locally, nurses can influence healthcare policy by discussing health reform with their legislators or by taking on administrative responsibilities in the nursing profession. Those who work in the nursing profession who have an affinity for politics can take classes, establish political organizations, or even seek public office.
Example
Diane Black, who has served in Congress since 2011, is example of a politically astute nurse. In 2013, she proposed a bill to Congress that would provide tax credits of up to $4,000 per year for all American college students who attend school at least part time, covering 100% of the cost of tuition and school-related expenses up to $2,000 and covering 25% of the cost over $2,000, up to $4,000. In 2014, her bill won approval from the House but was never taken up by the Senate. These nurses show us how to make a difference at the local and national levels by becoming politically active and knowledgeable (Ravitch et al., 2022).
