It is important to understand the special circumstances and needs of the poor and homeless as a population as well as its effect on the larger community.
The Discussion Board in this module addresses the homeless population and the role of the community health nurse when caring for this population. It is important for the nurse to understand the needs of the homeless as well as be aware of the resources available in the community that offer support, care, and comfort for them.

The discussion board will assist the student in meeting the following Module Objectives, Course Objectives (CO), and Student Learning Objectives (SLO) listed below:

5. Explain the physical, psychological, environmental, sociocultural, behavioral, and health system determinants that influence the health of the poor and homeless population. (Course Objectives 2, 3; BSN Student Learning Outcomes 3, 7)
6. Analyze the role of the population health nurse in the prevention of homelessness, illness, and injury prevention in the poor and homeless population. (Course Objectives 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5; BSN Student Learning Outcomes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, & 8)
7. Describe restoration strategies for the poor and homeless population and the nurse’s role in their implementation. (Course Objectives 1, 2, 3, & 4; BSN Student Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 6)

Instructions
Research an article not listed in your required reading on ethical issues related to the indigent and homeless population. In your initial response to the Discussion address two or more of the following topics and identify the topics at the top of your initial response:
Discuss the article and how you feel it may or may not relate to the practices you have witnessed toward these groups.
Examine some of the situations you have observed related to social inequities that result in an unfair burden of illness (to self and society) in vulnerable populations? For example, should voluntary immigrants receive government-funded health care?
Examine the impact of discharging patients to the street when the discharging agency understands the patient has nowhere to sleep?
Explain how the approach to the homeless who have mental health issues helps or hurts their situation? Think about these factors as you research, reflect on your experience, and make your post.
Describe the restoration strategies you have observed being used during the experiential learning hours you have spent in your agency?
Include two references that are not included in the required reading to support your initial post. Respond to two of your peers and include one outside reference to support your responses..
